Looking to get out and meet some other people your age..?  So we know that there is a demographic for the 30′s-40′s who are single and looking to meet someone, but lets not forget that there is also a demographic for the over 50′s who are looking for the exact same thing…

Now, if we (as the generation X) find it difficult to meet someone, then how is it for the over 50′s…? Well from the chats Ive had with people… pretty tough as well!

So to assist in getting people meeting each other, Cairns Social Events is going to start organizing events for that age bracket..  To start off,we will be hosting a lunch for 6 as well, however its only for the over 50′s..

Same format will apply, set in a beautiful restaurant of Cairns enjoying a stunning lunch.  So if you are 50+ and would like to come along to our of our events to meet other like minded people your age, then please go to our site and register your interest in attending.  Same rule applies, as soon as we have the numbers we will have a lunch organized for you and will advise you of all the details..

So we have decided we are going to let you guys decide what event you would like to come along to.  Now, we do have the Tango en Cairns night organized for the start of July which will be a lot of fun, but we also want to put on event for those folk who would like to meet others in a one on one environment.

So we have come up with 2 options for you.  You are going to have a choice of either a “Speed Dating Event” or a Lunch for 6 Event”….

Lunch for 6 is a great way to meet and socialize with others in a relaxed environment while you enjoy a beautiful 3 course meal.  The way this event works is, tables consists of 6 people, 3 guys and 3 girls.  There will be a minimum of 4 tables of 6.  Each table is set to have alternating guy and girl.  After each course is finished, each member will move seats so you are sitting next to a new person.  You will then have the opportunity to talk to new people every course along with others who are sitting on the same table.   This event will be set in a beautiful restaurant in a casual lunch environment setting.

In a Speed Dating event, you will meet 10 single guys or girls in your preferred age group. When you arrive, you will be greeted and given your date card for the evening. Once all the guests have arrived, the girls will be allocated an area where each boy will come around and spend 8 minutes chatting with you. This will give you enough time to decide if you would like to see them again. The following day you are sent the contact details of the people that liked you as well and you take it from there.

Now that you have an idea of how each event works, what we need you to do is to let us know which event you would prefer to attend.  To advise us of your preference go to the “Have your say page”.  There  will be a form to fill out so you can indicate which event you would prefer to come along to.  Once we have an idea of attendance, we will organize it!

A little about Cairns Tango Club……

The Cairns Tango Club is a not-for-profit club formed in November 2009.
The club holds absolute beginner classes in the Cairns area on a regular basis as well as open-level classes and intermediate-level classes.

So who has tried speed dating?? Well if you took a poll you would be very surprised how popular it really is..  Currently, it is the number one way guys and girls like to get out and meet other single people.

Most of the people I have spoken to say that they feel more comfortable being out in a smaller group along with not having to be in a loud bar or nightclub.  Most of the speed dating events hosted, are in nice venues, not too loud, not overcrowded or with loud music and everyone is there for the same reason.  Because everyone is out on the night for the same reason, people seem to be relaxed and really enjoy being there..

So after chatting to quite a few people , I decided to look into it for Cairns.  With all the research I did, I couldn’t find anyone doing it, so I have decided I will host a few nights in Cairns..

So if you haven’t tried speed dating before and feel a bit nervous, don’t be!  But to put you at ease a little, I have put together the top 5 speed dating tips I think works…

1. Dress to impress – give yourself enough time to choose your outfit.. Sometimes first impressions can make a bold statement.. good or bad!  Remember dress for the type of person you like..

2. Hold a conversation – you are going to need to talk!!  You have 8 minutes with each person.. Make sure you remember to talk with people not at them.. this can be a little off putting.. But don’t panic, there will also be a few ice breakers questions there for you to get the conversation started just in case you need that little bit it of extra help!

3. Stay true to yourself – try to keep to the topics of conversation about you.  Don’t talk about your job or kids or your ex (a big no no!).  Think of things that you like to do, places you have been to, a favorite restaurant.  Talk about  your strengths.  By talking about these topics you will appear more confident and interesting.. Remember this will give people a better insight into the type of person you are rather than the job you do.

4. Body language - because you will be sitting behind a table for each date, make sure you remember your body language from the start.  The main things to remember to do is lean in towards each date to show you are interested in what is being said and make sure you keep good eye contact while the person is talking. Never cross your arms even if you don’t like one of the dates – remember its only 8 minutes so its not long to look interested and be polite.. Try and sit upright and not slouch.  Not only does it help in concentrating on what is being said, it  helps you speak in a clear voice and you’ll appear more attractive, plus your chest will be lifted substantially!

And Most Importantly….

5. A smile and laughter is the key  – everyone loves a smile and to hear laughter.  Remember don’t freeze as this can give people the wrong idea.  Keep your smile real because your eyes will give you away if its not!

So give it a try.. get some friends together, come along and have a laugh… Even if you don’t meet your partner that night, its always a good night out..!
